2009, glad to see you've finally come

a quiet, meditative new year's eve in my little corner. quiet feels just right, actually. a few weeks ago i finally put up this shelf above a 1940's vintage desk i inherited from my grandmother. i hung the shelf at mantle height and it's been a lovely, candle lit stage for the holiday season. a large mirror rests on it and reaches nearly to the ceiling, which really brings more light and the illusion of height to the room.

also on the mantle, a collection of bare wood christmas trees. a salmon-pink vintage wreath from ink & peat hangs on the mirror. below the shelf, a wonderfully quirky painting by sam tudyk, a local portland painter. on the wall opposite, a gorgeous vintage moroccan wedding blanket, from maryam. i am completely besotted with it and love the way the sequins wink and sparkle.

happy, happy new year, my dear readers. i hope your holiday season has been warm, peaceful and bright with laughter. may 2009 bring us all good health, increasing prosperity and the energy to help make our world a better place.

axel ewald: a separate peace

olive trees

even in places where war never really ceases, there is beauty. i try to remember that when bombs are falling and lives are being destroyed. birds are migrating, connecting countries and continents like they have for centuries. artists live and work in every corner of the world and despite the actions of governments, we create. today, i am loving these drawings, sculpture and earth installations by axel ewald, an israeli multi-media artist. check out his extensive portfolio right here.

sprung from a secret garden: eily o'connell

sexy, earthy, otherworldly and a tiny bit creepy - unusual treasures by eily o'connell. like jewelry for the queen of the fairies, perhaps. more to see right here.

hello, dear readers. just a brief post to let you know that i am taking a wee blogging break, as i had surgery yesterday and the pain meds don't mix well with coherent writing. so far, healing and recovery are going well and i have my mom here from michigan looking after me.

i plan to be back on blogging by christmas, so do subscribe to this blog so you know when i have returned!

thanks for understanding...
